The Mitsubishi G4M1 was the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Force's most modern long-range bomber in 1941. The range of 5,400 kilometers was achieved without self-sealing tanks and armor. This meant that the bombers, known by the USA as "Betty", burst into flames after just a few hits and suffered correspondingly high losses. However, these aircraft were also responsible for spectacular successes in the early months of the Pacific War, including the sinking of the battleships HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse.
